Prosecutors in Izmir province issued arrest warrants for 148 suspects, including officers on active duty.
Ankara – Turkish security forces arrested 130 soldiers in operations concentrated in the western province of Izmir on suspicion of links to the FETO Terrorist Organization, the group behind the 2016 coup, the Anadolu Agency (AA) reports.
The operations were carried out in 47 provinces of the country while the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Izmir issued arrest warrants for a total of 148 suspects, 103 of whom were on duty.
Among those wanted in the operation against allegations of FETO’s presence within the Turkish Armed Forces was a colonel, as well as lieutenants, majors, captains, sergeants and specialist sergeants, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
The suspects are accused of communicating with the “secret imams” of FETO, senior FETO operatives, through paid telephones.
Twelve of the suspects belonged to the ground forces, while 47 were from the air force, 18 from the navy, 38 from the gendarmerie and 19 coast guards while 14 of the suspects were graduates of military schools that were dispersed after the coup attempt.
FETO and its U.S.-based leader, Fethullah Gülen, orchestrated the July 15, 2016, coup that left 251 people martyred and 2,734 injured.
FETO stands behind a long campaign to overthrow the state by infiltrating Turkish institutions, especially the army, police and judiciary.
