Former United States President Donald Trump emerged Sunday as the country’s dominant Republican, with the party trying to regain control of Congress next year and possibly run for president again in 2024.
At the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida, where hundreds of Republicans, among the party’s most ardent, gathered, Trump delivered his first major speech since losing the presidency to Democrat Joe Biden.
He made it clear that he has no plans to form a new political party, but left open the possibility of re-election in 2024.
“I stand before you today to declare that the extraordinary journey we embarked on together four years ago is far from over. We have gathered to talk about the future – the future of our movement, the future of our party and the future of our beloved country “, he said, while reaffirming his intention as the dominant figure of the party, leaving it open the alternative to running again after three years for another four-year term in the White House.
“Who knows. I can decide to defeat the Democrats for the third time. “But there are no plans for a new party to compete with the Republican Party, such claims are ‘fake news,'” Trump said.
Our party is “united,” Trump added, despite some Republican lawmakers saying they should bypass the former president, whose only term ended in fruitless election protests and the Jan. 6 riots in the Capitol.
The results of a poll conducted with conference participants gave Trump strong support with 55 percent, saying they would vote for him in the Republican presidential nomination race in 2024. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came out in place. second with 21 percent.
