New York Attorney General Letitia James has recently issued a summons to former President Donald Trump and his two eldest children to testify in connection with an ongoing civil investigation into his family’s business practices. his.
The summonses to Mr. Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr. and daughter Ivanka Trump stem from an investigation “into the valuation of owned or controlled assets” by Mr. Trump and his company, the Trump Organization.
The Associated Press reported that it has sought comment on these developments from the Trump family’s lawyers and Mrs. James.
The Attorney General’s attempt to secure evidence from the former president was announced in December. What is new in the court file made public on Monday is the summons to Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr.
The Trump family is expected to file a complaint in an attempt to overturn the summonses, launching a legal battle similar to what took place last year after Mrs. James’s office summoned another of Mr. Trump’s sons.
Last month Mr. Trump filed a lawsuit against Ms. James, seeking to end the investigation after the Attorney General asked him to appear to testify on Jan. 7. Mr Trump’s lawsuit, filed in federal court, alleges that the investigation violated his constitutional rights in a “covert attempt to publicly harm him (Trump) and his associates.”
Ms. James, a Democrat, has spent more than two years analyzing whether the Trump Organization has defrauded banks or the tax administration about the value of its assets, inflating them to secure favorable credit terms, or minimized, to benefit from tax cuts.
Investigators last year questioned one of Mr. Trump’s sons, Trump Organization chief executive Eric Trump. His attorneys initially canceled the planned testimony, but after a court ruling Eric Trump was forced to testify.
Although the civil investigation is separate from a criminal investigation being conducted by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Ms. James’s office has been involved in both. Earlier this year, former District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. provided access to real estate mogul tax records after years of fighting that ended twice in the Supreme Court.voa
