The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has taken an unprecedented step, enforcing the Emergency Act, in order to stop protests against compulsory coronavirus vaccination.
Trudeau has said that the period of implementation of the measures will be limited, reasonable and there will be no military engagement.
Without the need for a court order, banks will be able to block the bank accounts of any person associated with the protests.
“This is being done to keep Canadians safe and to protect jobs,” Trudeau told a news conference.
He said police would be given more power to detain or punish protesters in order to protect critical infrastructure.
Hundreds of protesters continue to be seen on the streets of the Canadian capital, Ottawa.
On Sunday, law enforcement officials removed protesters from a bridge to block trade crossings between Canada and the United States, following a week-long blockade.
Although at first the protests started as a sign of dissatisfaction with the decision to compulsorily vaccinate truck drivers, they have since expanded as the biggest challenge to all other restrictions to combat the pandemic.
