Relatives of a student found dead at the residence of her university in London said today that they hope “a day will come when women and girls will be safe”.
Sabita Thanwani, a student at City University, was found dead in her apartment in the Clerkenwell dormitory in central London on Saturday evening.
In a statement to police, the parents called the 19-year-old “an angel who saw no harm in anyone.”
22-year-old Maher Maaroufe, who had been in a relationship with him, was arrested the same day on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
The family wrote in its statement: “Sabita Thanëani was our daughter, whose life was interrupted so quickly. “She was abducted by her loved ones, by her mother, father, brother, grandparents and family members.”
Ms. Thanwani was found with severe wounds to the neck and despite the efforts of emergency services, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Maaroufe, the Tunisian without an exact address, who was not a university student, has been arrested.
The relatives added in their statement:
“We thank the police for their tireless work to do justice to Sabita. “We thank everyone for their support and demand that privacy be respected so that we can mourn in peace.”
