At least 17 people were killed and dozens injured when four train carriages derailed between the cities of Mashhad and Yazd in Iran.
State media report that a train with 350 passengers derailed in eastern Iran this Wednesday, killing 17 passengers and injuring dozens.
DW said a local official has indicated that the train collided with an excavator before derailing.
Aerial footage showed how the train carriages had been destroyed while rescue workers were helping the injured.
Iran has railways spanning almost 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) across the country.
Iran saw its worst train disaster in 2004, when a train loaded with gasoline, trash, sulfur and cotton crashed near Neyshabur, killing nearly 320 people and injuring 460 others. Five villages were also damaged in this incident.
