The difficult weather situation in India has brought tragic consequences, as 20 people in the eastern Indian state of Bihar have lost their lives in 24 hours.
Local media have warned that further lightning storms are expected in the northern parts of the state on Wednesday and Thursday.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has asked people to closely follow the advice of the state’s disaster management authority.
This is not the first case of people being killed by lightning, as hundreds of people are killed every year by lightning during the monsoon rains in India.
Some of the people most exposed to danger are those who work in open spaces.
According to the BBC, Kumar announced a compensation of 400.00 rupees ($5,008; £4,154) to the families of each of the victims.
The Prime Minister during a meeting last week asked state officials to install lightning in all government buildings, including schools and hospitals.
The state’s geographical position makes it particularly susceptible to frequent lightning strikes during the monsoons.
Satellite data collected by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology also shows that attacks had “increased rapidly” between 1995 and 2014.
India recorded more than 18 million lightning strikes between April 2020 and March 2021, according to a study by the non-profit Council for the Promotion of Climate Resilience Observing Systems.
This was a 34% increase compared to a similar period last year.
