Two young Florida sheriff officers in the U.S. who had just sailed a baby together have killed themselves two days apart, leaving the 1-month-old baby orphaned, authorities announced.
Officer Clayton Osteen died Jan. 1 as Officer Victoria Pacheco ended her life “after the death of Officer Osteen,” Sheriff Ken Mascara said in a statement.
“As a sheriff, I considered these two young officers to be valuable, ambitious and good complement to our professional staff,” Mascara said, among other things. The child’s name has not been made public by the authorities.
Police were called to Osteen’s home on New Year’s Eve and found that he had been seriously injured while attempting to kill himself while off duty.
A day later his desperate family decided to stop the machine that kept him in a coma, Mascara said.
As of Tuesday authorities learned of Pacheco’s suicide, for which they did not indicate the manner of death.
“It is impossible for us to fully understand the personal circumstances that led to this devastating loss, but we pray that the tragedy will be an impetus for change, an impetus to alleviate the stigma of mental well-being and normalize conversations about the challenges each of we face regularly in this world, ”said Mascara.
The 24-year-old Osteen had previously served with the US Navy and received the Officer of the Year medal in 2020, a year after joining the police, writes the network WPTV.
He had saved a person’s life while on duty by doing artificial respiration and cardio-pulmonary massage, according to the agency.
While 23-year-old Pacheco, who had joined the police in 2020, was also a distinguished officer.
“Clayton and Victoria were parents for the first time, happy for their new family. “But tragically for unknown reasons, Clayton committed suicide on New Year’s Eve, and Victoria followed her boyfriend two days later,” read a charity fundraising page for the funeral and the orphaned child.
