Albania is being used more and more as a transit route for foreign emigrants to Europe.
In April alone, 648 illegal immigrants were apprehended by the border police and frotex at the border connecting Greece with Albania in the Gjirokastra area.
Illegal emigration is becoming a lucrative tool for Albanian domestic traffickers.
According to the European border police Fontex, only during April, during its joint operations with the Albanian police, 19 traffic cases were hit where about 200 emigrants were assisted by Albanian citizens to cross the border.
Police have arrested 26 people and declared 7 of them wanted. From 2019 Frontex is deployed in Albania to prevent cross-border crimes and mainly illegal trafficking of citizens fleeing countries in conflict.
But the increase of conflict situations in the world, the warm climate and the weakness of the authorities, have turned the Albanian corridor into a favorite of foreign emigrants.
