Scholars think that not all foreign words that have entered in recent decades should be eliminated. There are hundreds of thousands of words that are actually needed and they need to be adapted. This requires a new dictionary. The latest dictionary published by the institutes of linguistics and literature is from 2006.
“In the dictionary 2006, 48 thousand words and 5 thousand phraseological units. When Albanian does not have so many words. it is a medium type dictionary “said Valter Memishaj, Director of the Institute of Linguistics and Literature.
This dictionary today does not meet the need of the Albanian language. Compiling a new dictionary is an urgent need. The words we have borrowed from the new languages must be studied, adapted to the norms of Albanian and put to use.
“Businessmen say we have our showrooms. but the problem arises how we will write this word in Albanian. Here I point the finger at linguists who have not paid due attention to the processing of these words in English. It is up to us to provide scientific solutions “said Xhevat Lloshi, Director of the Institute of Linguistics.
The director of the institute of linguistics and literature gives us an approximate figure of how many words the Albanian language has today with the enrichment that occurs year after year. “With the thought that it is constantly enriched, Albanian today can have 400-500 thousand words,” said Valter Memishaj, linguist.
So out of 500 thousand words, we have in the dictionary in 2006 only 48 thousand. The rest are left for free and unstudied use. “Language needs care. “Like a garden that did not have a good garden, all kinds of weeds grow there,” said Emil Lafe, a linguist.
“There is a lack of institutional attention, organized, for today’s problems. This is the real danger of the Albanian language, not the danger from abroad “said Xhevat Lloshi, linguist.
