Doctors and nurses are the category that most have chosen to emigrate abroad. In the last five years, about 3 thousand Albanian doctors and over 2 thousand nurses, according to the order of the nurse, have received the certificate to leave the country.
But data from the nurses association is much higher. They speak of a figure of 7000 departed from the ranks of nurses alone.
A considerable part with several years of experience, even in QSUT.
This has led to the abandonment of the country by medical staff and the drastic shrinkage of this so important service. Currently, the number of doctors, nurses and midwives per 100,000 inhabitants in Albania is much lower than the average of EU countries, but also of the Western Balkan countries. This number has even been decreasing.
In 2000, Albania had 140 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants, in 2016 it had 120 and in 2018, this indicator dropped to 110 doctors. As a result of this mass abandonment in our country, another alarm has been raised for a long time: in Albania, the weakest part of doctors and nurses remain, who will not know how to provide a quality service.
This is confirmed by the average with which, this year, medical students have been accepted to start specializations. If until 10 years ago no one could enter specializations, with an average of less than 8.5 of high school, this year the average of specialist doctors, so who will take care of our health, dropped to 5, even again quotas remained unfulfilled.
