The first day of the official visit of the Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski to Bulgaria has ended.
According to the government of Northern Macedonia, the working part of the official visit begins tomorrow with the intergovernmental plenary session between the two neighboring countries, which will be co-chaired by Prime Minister Kovacevski and his Bulgarian counterpart Kiril Petkov.
The agenda includes a face-to-face meeting between the two prime ministers and a meeting between the chief diplomat of Northern Macedonia, Bujar Osmani and his counterpart, Teodora Gençovska, according to the Anadolu Agency.
The working part of the joint session of the two governments closes with a press conference of Prime Ministers Kovacevski and Petkov, where they will announce the results of the intergovernmental session.
Tomorrow afternoon, Prime Minister Kovacevski will also hold meetings with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and Parliament Speaker Nikola Minchev.
Early last week, Petkov paid an official visit to Skopje, where he was received by Kovacevski. At a joint news conference, the Bulgarian prime minister warned of “more intense dynamics in resolving outstanding issues” between the two neighboring countries.
Northern Macedonia and Bulgaria signed a Good Neighbor Agreement in 2017, but the dispute over the two countries’ common history remains unresolved. Bulgaria does not approve Northern Macedonia’s negotiating framework with the European Union (EU) because it does not reflect Bulgarian demands for the Macedonian language and the Macedonian minority.
Recall that in March 2020, EU member states agreed to start membership negotiations with Northern Macedonia and Albania.
The coalition government of former Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov submitted a document to the EU outlining the conditions to be met by the Government of Northern Macedonia, after which, in November 2020, Bulgaria vetoed accession negotiations. of Northern Macedonia in the EU.
