In just eight weeks, Russia has turned back time, forcing Ukraine to relive the worst horrors of the 20th century.
Thousands dead, millions displaced, cities turned into ruins in two months of war.
Occupying forces have been charged with war crimes after bombing maternity wards and civilians hiding in a theater. Urban sieges, mass graves, fruitless peace talks.
And yet Russia has failed to invade Kiev and overthrow the government. Ukrainian forces have set up a strong defense and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has shown great leadership, writes the BBC.
But as Russian forces regroup in the east, can Ukraine resist? Can Western powers increase their military support and stay united around common goals of war?
Or will time, fatigue, and depletion of ammunition stocks do their damage? This war has two months, but there may be many more.
What has happened in the last few hours?
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will visit Kiev today, according to Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky. They would be the first senior American officials to visit since the invasion. Washington has not yet commented on the visit.
At a news conference Saturday night, Zelensky warned that Ukraine would abandon peace talks with Moscow if Russia killed any of Mariupol’s last defenders or if Russia held an independence referendum in the occupied city of Kherson.
Ukraine’s armed forces say Russia continues to attack its units at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, which is said to house hundreds of people.
