Military delegations from Russia, Ukraine and Turkey are meeting today with representatives of the United Nations in the hope of ending the deadlock of Ukrainian grains, blocked due to Russian aggression against the neighboring country.
The meeting is held in Istanbul, preceded by the telephone conversation that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held on this issue with the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ukraine and its allies are demanding the reopening of its Black Sea ports, which Kiev says are closed due to the Russian blockade.
Western states have increased their demands to reopen ports and allow grain shipments, especially to Middle Eastern and African states that depend on Ukrainian grain to feed their populations.
Turkey has been working with the UN intensively these days to reach a deal after the invasion of Ukraine on February 24 caused an immediate increase in the price of wheat, cooking oil, fuel and fertilizers.
Details of the plan to be discussed in Istanbul include diverting Ukrainian grain ships to mine-strewn port waters, Russia’s agreement to a ceasefire during cargo movement and inspections by the Turkish side, which will serve to allay Moscow’s concerns about arms smuggling.
Erdogan told Putin it was time to take action on a UN plan to create safe corridors in the Black Sea for grain exports, while insisting on negotiating an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Zelenesky expressed through Twitter that he appreciates his help to the Turkish president regarding the resumption of exports and added that Moscow should stop taking Ukrainian grain from the occupied territories.
