As a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainian people, the Municipality of Tirana will build a new school in the war-torn city of Kharkiv, as well as help in the reconstruction process.
In a speech given to the members of the Municipal Council of Tirana, through a direct video link, the Mayor of Kharkiv in Ukraine, Ihor Terekhov, thanked Mayor Veliaj and Albania for the support offered to his country.
“Of course, we will be able to rebuild Kharkiv after the war, faster, if we get the best experts and specialists in various fields. Now my team is working on the creation of a Coordinating Council of partner cities, to use the means of inter-municipal cooperation as efficiently as possible. The city of Tirana has its own experience in urban recovery and economic development, so we are grateful for your help in the post-war reconstruction process, including your city’s participation in the work of the Coordinating Council of partner cities. I am convinced that only with joint efforts we can achieve peace, stability and prosperity. Thank you for your attention and help for Ukraine.” said Mayor Terekhov.
Mayor Veliaj immediately responded positively to the invitation of the mayor of Kharkiv to be part of the Coordinating Council of partner cities that will help rebuild Ukraine. Veliaj expressed the readiness of Tirana to contribute to the reconstruction and overcoming the consequences of the war.
“I am sure that there will be a “Marshall Plan” for the reconstruction of Ukraine, where we want to play our role. As long as in the middle of the war we are talking about schools, education, about knowledge, about children, about the future, I believe that this is a moral that we share in brotherhood with our friends in Kharkiv. I look forward to playing our humble role. I believe that between cities we can be practical, we can be efficient, and I would very much like that in the spirit of the fantastic schools we have built in Tirana, with the same design, with the same concept, to give Kharkiv a beautiful school , as we have conceived many of the fantastic spaces of Tirana, for the boys and girls of your city. We are Albanians, we live in Tirana, in the European Capital of Youth. We want to do one good in this great sea of contributions, thinking and designing now the free Ukraine, the victorious Ukraine, the Ukraine of the future”, said Veliaj.
Mayor Veliaj stated that Albania and Tirana have always been close to those in need and expressed the belief that the victory in Ukraine will not be delayed. “All the attitudes of our nation, of our city, of our state, have been in support of the Kosovar brothers and sisters when they needed it, in support of the opposition of Iran when they needed it and moved to Albania, in support of the activists of Civil Society and journalists of Afghanistan when they were in need, and today we support hundreds of children from Ukraine when they are in need. It is our spirit and our DNA. This is us! Regardless of the fact that our support is symbolic, with the naming of a street “Free Ukraine” in our city, or sometimes with the concrete construction of a school, I want you to know that we are with you and support you with all our possibilities. Of course, we are a small country, but with the Prime Minister and Albania, which is a member of the Security Council, or with our entire network of cities supporting Ukraine, we are with you. We look forward to the hour of victory that will surely come”underlined Veliaj.
