Tirana also becomes part of the celebrations in honor of the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Through a special ceremony, the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, the Special Envoy of the United Kingdom to the Western Balkans, Sir Stuart Peach and the Ambassador of Great Britain, Alastair King-Smith, lit the “Jubilee Lantern” yesterday evening in the Martyrs’ Cemetery.
Mayor Veliaj praised the special relationship that exists between Tirana and London, which is reflected in the many success stories that Albanians have achieved in the United Kingdom.
“A large number of Albanians living and working in the UK have created their own success story there. Many of our brothers and sisters from Kosovo found refuge there. I myself have been a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship and when I consider that every year, dozens of young people have the chance not only to get a degree in the UK, but to become part of an experience, of an open and free world, when I think how many of us are leaders in institutions today and inject the British experience in Albania, it is a great pleasure. “Relations between states can definitely be measured by trade exchanges, exchanges of goods and the economy, but I believe that there is another relationship, which is the spiritual exchange that people and peoples have.” stressed Veliaj.
He said that despite the challenges of the last century, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, has proved to be a moral compass of world authorities and a proof that good and justice always triumph.
“In the times we live in, the point of moral gravity is very important. In the 70 years of the Queen on the throne, what has made the difference. Today, we have a compass, a moral compass of world authorities that has seen all these changes, and yet proves, are a testament to the fact that good triumphs, right triumphs, love triumphs, an open and progressive world triumphs. “This message is even stronger today, especially when there is a war in Europe in Ukraine.”said the mayor of Tirana.
The Special Envoy of the United Kingdom to the Western Balkans, Sir Stuart Peach, said that lighting this beacon is the right way to mark 100 years of friendship between the two countries.
“This tradition, which is also known in your region, of lighting a beacon of hope, also a beacon of friendship, is the right way to mark 100 years of Anglo-British-Albanian friendship. So, thank you for making this possible. “said Sir Stuart Peach.
The Ambassador of Great Britain in Tirana, Alastair King-Smith expressed his gratitude to the Albanian people for the continuous support and the very good Albanian-British relations.
“We are here at a special moment, to light the Jubilee lanterns, as a symbol of commitment and the duration of Her Majesty’s service, as well as a sign of respect from Albanians for Her Majesty. Therefore, we are very grateful to you and the Albanian people, who are giving us this special support “he declared.
This year, Queen Elizabeth II became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years in the service of the people of the United Kingdom. The Queen has been served by 14 UK Prime Ministers, with the first Prime Minister being Winston Churchill.
