Tirana and Struga will work together to develop initiatives and projects in the field of technology, environment, tourism and culture. The Municipality of Struga, in cooperation with the People’s Movement “Union”, has expressed interest in cooperating with the Municipality of Tirana and the Union of Albanian Municipalities in the Region for the implementation of these initiatives.
In the signing of the cooperation agreement between the two cities, where the mayor of Struga, Ramis Merko, was also present, the mayor Erion Veliaj expressed the will of Tirana to advance the projects. “If we have spaces where we can cooperate, to strengthen relations and organize joint activities, let us do it with great pleasure this year, when Tirana is the European Capital of Youth. Most of the staff are young, most of the executives are girls and ladies, which shows our emancipated face. “Our European passport is not only what cities look like, but also how they are managed,” Veliaj declared.
He said that the special relationship between the two cities is also reflected in the high number of tourists on both sides. “I want the citizens, here and there on the border, to use this common tourist space, as for the citizens of Struga who come to Tirana at the weekend for music, shopping or activities, and vice versa. One million citizens of Tirana have an excellent opportunity to visit Struga. I can not expect that, as we have a special report, so our citizens have such a special report between them and try to encourage movements here and there on the border “, declared Veliaj.
The Mayor of Struga, Ramis Merko praised Tirana as an example that should be followed by other local units in the region. “It is a privilege for us, as a small town, to cooperate with a very large municipality and with a mayor known to the whole world, not only Albania, Northern Macedonia or the region. Every time we have followed you and we have you as a “brand” of mayors in the region. We have started to practice the measures you take and the work you do in our municipalities and communes. You are this year the Capital of young people, which for us is also an impetus in this regard. The measures you have taken, such as Car Free Day or the mass planting of trees, have also encouraged us to take such initiatives. “Tirana is also a guide for the work that we must do,” said Merko.
The agreement between Tirana and Struga envisages cooperation for twinning between the two municipalities, development of tourism, creation of cultural week “Culture of two cities”, development of online application for industrial-economic capacities, implementation of the project for protection from pollution Sundays green ”, the project of planting trees by the citizens“ My twin tree ”etc.
