A tiger has been killed by the security of the zoo where he lived, after biting seriously injuring a cleaner who entered the secluded area of the park in Florida, authorities announced.
‘Eco’, the eight-year-old Malaysian tiger was found with the young man’s arm in his mouth at the ‘Naples Zoo’.
Officers who came to the scene tried to get the animal to release the young man in his 20s by drawing his attention, but were later forced to shoot as the tiger did not intend to release, reports say.
After being shot the tiger retreated to his area but it was later confirmed that the large feline had died.
The cleaner was rushed to hospital where he was being treated for serious injuries.
It is learned that the young man was working for an outside cleaning service of the shops and toilets of the zoo and some officials said that he was not supposed to clean the premises of the animals.
Some others suggested that the cleaner had attempted to pet Eko when the latter attacked him.
The sheriff’s office said: “Preliminary information indicates that the man was touching or feeding the animal, which is an unauthorized and dangerous activity.”
“The tiger then grabbed the man by the arm and pulled him into his separation. The young man had crossed the initial barrier and had pulled out his arm inside the tiger division.
Eco had come to the Naples Zoo in February 2020 from the Woodland Zoo in Seattle.
When the zoo announced Eko’s arrival he described him as a ‘great ambassador of his species’.
