An American and two Spaniards were gored by the horns of the bulls today in the thrilling San Fermin festival run on the cobbled streets of Pamplona.
The herd of bulls split into separate groups, and one of them lagged behind the others, making the course unpredictable for the benefactors.
Several runners fell while chasing the bulls in the narrow streets, while television footage showed one of the bulls hitting the runner, lifting him into the air with his horn.
A 29-year-old Spaniard was gored in the knee while two others were gored inside the city’s bullring at the end of the run.
One of them was a 25-year-old from Florida who was hit in the leg and the other a 29-year-old Spanish man who was hit between the legs.
Six of six bulls took to the running course as humans advanced alongside them, reaching the end of the route inside the bullring in 3 1/2 minutes.
The first horn blast at the festival happened on Saturday when a 39-year-old Spanish man was gored from the horn to the rear.
Sixteen people have died at the bull festival since 1910. The most recent death occurred in 2009 when a 27-year-old Spanish man was stabbed to death in the neck and body.
His parents had brought bunches of flowers to the festival this year for the 13th anniversary of his death.
Television footage showed a bull repeatedly charging at a runner, knocking him into wooden barriers, and then charging at another on foot.
The spectacle lasted just over three minutes on the roughly 900m run route on cobbled streets in the north of the city.
Then the bulls went to the city’s toreador arena, where their trauma continued in murderous duels.
Several other runners were treated for falls during the run.
