UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for evacuation corridors to be opened in Mariupol, saying the besieged city is a “crisis within a crisis”.
“Thousands of civilians are in need of help to save their lives. “Many elderly people need medical care or have limited mobility, they need a way out of the apocalypse.”said Guterres.
The UN chief met with Zelensky and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba today, following a visit to Moscow where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Guterres also spoke about his meeting with Putin, where he said the Russian president agreed in principle with the involvement of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross in the evacuation of civilians at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol.
He added that he had held intensive discussions with Zelensky to facilitate the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol.
“The world sees you, hears you and is amazed at your perseverance and determination. I also know that words of solidarity are not enough. “I am here to meet the needs on the ground and to increase operations.”he further added.
