A young British tourist has lost his life in a terrible accident, where he was hit by the blades of a helicopter near Athens.
The 22-year-old, identified as Jack Fenton, was getting off the plane at the private airport yesterday evening along with three tourists, including his brother, after a flight from Mykonos to Athens, according to the Daily Mail.
He is said to have walked behind the Bell 407 helicopter with its engines still engaged and decapitated himself as his horrified brother watched.
The accident happened around 18:20 local time and emergency services were called to the area.
The pilot has been arrested on charges of manslaughter and two technicians have also been detained by police while investigators investigate the circumstances of the accident.
Police said the propellers tend to continue for about two minutes after the engine is shut off, unless the pilot presses a button to stop them in about 50 seconds.
The helicopter door has no lock, so anyone can get out if they want. Investigations by police and the Independent Aviation Accident Investigation Authority and Civil Aviation Service will focus on whether the pilot told the passengers to get off.
A police source told The Sun: We are talking about a tragedy, an unprecedented tragedy that should never have happened.
“The cause is being investigated but it remains unclear why this happened or was allowed to happen when the blades pose such an obvious danger.”
The pilot of the second helicopter carrying the victim’s parents chose to divert from the private airport in Spata and instead made an unscheduled landing at Athens International Airport to prevent the parents from seeing the scene of the tragic accident.
The family had planned to disembark at Superior Air before being chauffeured to Eleftherios Venizelos Airport where they would board the family’s private jet for a flight back to Britain.
Police sources did not release the identity of the family, but they are known to be extremely wealthy.
Locals told The Sun that limousines were waiting in Spata, ready to transport them to a private jet stationed at Athens International Airport.
The circumstances of the tragic accident are not yet known. Sources said the 115-mile journey in two helicopters cost more than £15,000.
