At least 13 people have been killed and several injured in a mass brawl at an Ecuadorian prison, in the same “facility” where similar clashes claimed the lives of 44 inmates two months ago.
Ecuador’s prisons agency said 13 people were killed and two injured in the latest mass riot yesterday (July 18).
This is the second tragic incident at Santo Domingo’s Bellavista prison where 44 people were killed in clashes and a subsequent fire in May.
The agency announced in a statement: “Unfortunately, the command reports 13 dead and two wounded prisoners. Army forces and prison security are retaking control of the facility.
The infamous prison of the city of Santo Domingo de los Colorados, is about 80 km from the capital Quito.
In the May tragedy, there were also more than 200 fugitives after the riots.
Ecuador has one of the worst records for prison security as clashes between gangs have left 316 inmates dead in the past 12 months.
Ecuadorian prisons are reported to be 12.5% over capacity with a total of 33,900 inmates currently being counted.
Human rights agencies say the clashes stem from harsh conditions, shortages and corruption of prison guards, as well as shortcomings in government policies for the sector.
