A Ukrainian mother has told CNN how her 12-year-old son and husband were killed while fleeing an evacuation boat in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region.
Yulia Nesterenko and her family had decided to flee the area after Russian forces invaded the country.
On April 7, the family of three and 11 others boarded an evacuation boat led by a local resident to cross the Dnipro River.
Nesterenko, two other survivors, a friend of a victim and several regional officials told CNN how the boat was shot as it was moving near the Russian-controlled village of Osokorivka.
The mother said the boy fell into her arms and that her husband was behind her when he was shot in the head.
Four people were killed in the attack, three including Ms. Nesterenko’s husband Oleh, who died on the boat, while her son Vladimir died at the hospital.
