Five days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, things do not seem to have gone as planned for Vladimir Putin so far.
According to CNN, Russian forces have encountered fiercer resistance than expected from an unprepared and unarmed Ukrainian army.
Russia has so far failed to capture major cities across Ukraine, nor the capital Kiev. On Sunday, Ukrainian forces successfully repulsed a Russian advance on a strategic airport near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, which has been under almost constant attack.
In addition to a fierce attack by Ukrainian forces and civilians, the Russian occupation has suffered logistical challenges, with soldiers on the front line running short of fuel, ammunition and food.
“They have problems. They lack oil, they are moving very slowly and morale is definitely a problem,Said a NATO official on Russian forces.
But a senior U.S. defense official told reporters Sunday that Russia has used only two-thirds of the total combat force applied to the mission, leaving a considerable amount of forces available to push the offensive.
As the invasion enters its second week, it is impossible to ignore the fact that Putin’s plans have met with stronger resistance than he ever imagined.
