For nearly half a decade, former Russian soldier Marat Gabidullin was a fighter of the infamous Wagner mercenary group. Gabidullin worked for the Russian private Wagner Army in Ukraine and Syria from 2015 to 2019.
He is the first member of this paramilitary group to speak openly about what this group of mercenaries has done, and has even published a book recently.
“We have used mercenaries in a way that contradicts all moral norms and values and to such an extent that Western countries have neither the data nor the idea.” said Marat Gabidullin
But now, as fighting erupts in Ukraine, he believes the Kremlin should halt foreign military intervention and focus on improving people’s lives in Russia.
“The situation in Russia is difficult today because the recently adopted laws provide for criminal sanctions for anyone who tells the truth about the military and for anyone who expresses his opinion by calling it a war and not a special operation. This is considered a violation of the law. In Russia you have missiles, but you do not have a normal car. We have not developed our iPhone. “We are completely dependent on Western technology.” – said Marat Gabidullin
The private shadow military company, the Wagner Group, has emerged over the past decade as one of the most controversial aspects of modern Russia under President Vladimir Putin. The militants are involved in conflicts not only in Syria and Ukraine, but also in African countries including Libya, the Central African Republic and Mali.
“Wagner is a small army,” he said. This is its main purpose and depending on the situation in the region where the units are working, they can be sent elsewhere to solve other problems. As for the denials of Russian President Vladimir Putin about the existence of the Wagner group, I can tell you that the formation of a weapon like ours, this can be done only with the permission of state authorities, no less! “- said Marat Gabidullin
He further showed that Wagner is made up of savage soldiers who know no other job than war and who take pleasure in conflict situations. But most, he tells AFP, were simply those who had joined for the money, which could reach thousands of dollars a month during a mission.
“The money they earn in these structures, they could not earn anywhere else in Russia”, said Gabidullin. Fearing for the safety of his life after the book was published, he left Russia earlier this year and now lives in France.
