A far-right lawmaker in Israel, accompanied by some ultranationalist supporters, entered the holy site in Jerusalem on May 29. The visit prompted Palestinian crowds to throw stones and fireworks at nearby Israeli police.
The riots erupted before a massive Israeli ultranationalist march that is scheduled to take place later in the day in a Muslim neighborhood in the Old City of Jerusalem. About 3,000 Israeli police were deployed throughout the city before the march.
Israel said the march is intended to celebrate the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem, including the Old City, in the 1967 Middle East war.
Israel claims that all of Jerusalem is its capital. But Palestinians, who claim East Jerusalem is their capital, have seen the march as a provocation.
Last year, the march sparked an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza militants.
The riots took place in a complex on top of a hill, which is considered a holy place by both Jews and Muslims. This complex is home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam. It is also the holiest site for Jews, who call it the Temple Mount and consider it the home of biblical temples.
