With 55.8 per cent of the vote, Gabriel Boric, leader of the left-wing coalition Pacto Apruebo Dignidad, won the Chilean presidential election. He defeated Antonio Cast, the far-right candidate.
In the first round of elections on November 21, Kast received 27.9 per cent of the vote, Boric 25.8 per cent. At the age of 35, Boric will be the youngest president in Chilean history.
The elections, which took place on Sunday, were considered the most polarized in recent years, especially due to the large protests that began in October 2019 and because of them it was finally possible to change the Constitution of the country, and which was adopted during the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.
Cast is 55 years old, he is part of the Republican Party of Chile and during the election campaign he presented himself as the man who can establish order in the country. He is a supporter of Pinochet and is considered homophobic. The 55-year-old has stated that he is the only person in the country who can stop immigration.
Boric, twenty years his junior, is a former leader of the student movement and has been elected to two terms in Parliament. He has vowed to strengthen the role of the state in guaranteeing fundamental rights such as education and health.
In a telephone conversation with outgoing Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, Boric said he would be “the president of all Chileans”.
In a message on the social network Twitter, Cast congratulated Boric on “his great triumph”, adding that “he is now the elected president of Chile and deserves all our respect and constructive cooperation”.
Boric, in his comment, wrote: Hope has won over fear.
