The albatross known as ‘Wisdom’ (Wisdom), the world’s oldest wild bird, has laid its egg at the age of 70.
The albatross was born on February 1, in a wildlife reserve in the northern Pacific Ocean, the US Fish and Wildlife Service announced today.
Albatrosses are giant seagulls that usually live 12-40 years, but Wisdom, the albatross of the Laysan family, has been identified by researchers since 1956.
The father of Wisdom’s chick is Akeakamai, with whom the mother has been in a couple since 2012, say US wildlife officials.
Albatrosses usually stay that way forever when they mate, but Wisdom is believed to have had other partners in the past who have not had her longevity.
Although Wisdom gave birth to her chick in February, in the small island group Midway Atoll in the Pacific, the event was only reported this week.
“Wisdom laid her egg sometime in the last days of November. Shortly afterwards, she returned to the sea to look for food while her partner Akeakamai took on the task of heating the egg.
“Albatrosses share all the parenting tasks, both during the egg incubation period and later in the bird feeding.”
Officials believe the albatross in question gave birth to 30 to 36 birds during its lifetime. Albatrosses lay only one egg once every few years. The Midway Atoll Islands are home to the world’s largest colony of albatrosses.
