The months-long tensions that preceded the invasion of Ukraine prompted the world to think more about defense.
Global spending in this area turns out to have increased significantly last year, surpassing for the first time the level of 2 trillion dollars. A new report by the Stockholm-based International Peace Research Institute says that despite the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, defense spending increased by 0.7 percent last year, compared to 2020, going at $ 2.113 trillion.
The five countries with the highest spending are: the United States, China, India, Britain and Russia, the report notes. The United States accounts for 38 percent of military spending, while China accounts for 14 percent. According to the Institute, military spending in Russia increased by 2.9 percent, respectively to $ 65.9 billion or 4.1 percent of gross domestic product.
The increase in spending as a whole came at a time when Moscow was preparing for the invasion of Ukraine, the document said. Ukraine, on the other hand, recorded a decline in defense spending last year – to $ 5.9 billion or 3.2 percent of its gross domestic product.
However, the report notes, overall defense spending in Ukraine has increased by 72 percent since Russia illegally annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
