In the camera footage of the homage to British teacher Sabina Nessa two weeks after the macabre murder, a woman was seen weeping and comforted by friends.
Today, the Daily Mail reveals that the name of the woman who cried in the homage in Eastburne was Ionela Selamaj, the Romanian wife of the Albanian murderer Koci Selamaj, who yesterday admitted in court the macabre act with sexual motivation.
“We met by chance in homage,” recalls her friend who comforted Jonela.
“She was held on my shoulder and I hugged her. “He cried all evening, then we went to the beach and threw flowers in the water.”
“She kept saying that she did not understand what she had with Sabine and that it would have made more sense if she had killed him herself,” the woman said.
Ionela, the cleaner and part-time dancer, who was married three years ago to the killer in Eastburne, had previously recognized the uncontrolled behavior of her distribution driver husband.
“She told us he had become violent in recent months,” said a friend of the Romanian woman during a video call following his arrest.
“Three times he tried to kill him. One day he had returned from work and after an argument had put his hands on his throat. “She was afraid she was going to die, but something happened and he stopped.”
The last time the 36-year-old attacked Ionela she was so horrified that she decided to leave him. This happened six weeks before the murder.
While on the day he would later come to London to kill Sabina, he demanded a meeting with his wife in the parking lot of the hotel where she worked.
The wife did not know he had booked a hotel room. “He asked them to meet at the parking lot, without telling him that he had taken a room in the hotel where she worked,” says the woman’s friend.
“He asked her to have sex but she refused, then returned to the room and then left for London.”
A few hours after this meeting, Selamaj had killed Sabina. He had then taken his Nissan Micra car and returned to the hotel, where he spent the night.
Nine days later he was arrested by police, who raided his apartment in Eastbourne where he previously lived with his wife.
Ionela now believes that she is lucky to be still alive, but she can not pass the feeling of guilt that she failed to do anything to stop him.
The marriage certificate says that the couple got married in 2018. Selamaj had not filled in the space where he had to write ‘profession’, while his wife described herself as a ‘laundry worker’.
Neither couple spoke each other’s language, but communicated mostly in Italian, as they both spoke it well.
Their relationship seems to have deteriorated last year, when Selamaj put the woman under pressure to settle in London, saying he had found work there. He was delivering pizza to Domino’s restaurant.
The macabre murder of the 28-year-old British teacher is still unclear about the motivation, but prosecutors say Selamaj’s premeditated, predatory-style act involved sadistic and sexual elements.
Sabina’s murder happened on the evening of Friday 17 September, when she came out of the apartment block where she lived in Kidbrooke, south-east London.
She had come to the area a few months earlier to settle near her job as a Rushey Green elementary school teacher.
Her father Abdur Rouf, and mother Azibun Nessa, had come to London from Bangladesh in the 1980s, and four daughters were born, among whom Sabina was second.
