Rakibul Hasan’s fire truck was the first to arrive at a burning warehouse in Bangladesh.
But after a devastating explosion, all 15 people who were with him are either dead, missing or injured.
Five of Hasan’s colleagues have lost their lives, two are missing, trusted dead, and seven have been seriously injured by the burns.
The 22-year-old who became a firefighter three years ago was in the water truck when the massive explosion lit up the night sky a few miles away.
When he went outside he faced the massacre of the bodies of friends and colleagues in front of him.
“I can never forget that. “All my colleagues died before my eyes, I do not know how I escaped alive,” Bappy told AFP.
Firefighters in Bangladesh are poorly equipped and underpaid, but for rural families it is an opportunity to escape poverty.
Hasan is the only child of a farming family and when he got the job he believed he was the luckiest man.
“It was a proud moment for my parents and me, because I would serve the nation,” he said.
“We worked so many nights together, we had the same background, I know how devastating their deaths are for families,” adds the survivor.
