A well-known psychiatrist was stabbed to death in front of horrified crowds yesterday at a “political festival” on the Swedish island of Gotland.
64-year-old Ing-Marie Wieselgren, who already worked for the health branch of the association of regional authorities in Sweden, was considered one of the strongest voices in defense of mental health.
Carola Gunnarsson, president of the state association, said: “We have lost a valuable colleague and person, and all of Sweden has lost one of the most powerful voices for mental health.”
Ing-Marie was stabbed to death in front of shocked attendees in the town of Visby – where a major conference of the country’s political parties was being held.
Witnesses tried to save him and rushed him to the hospital, but unfortunately he died from his injuries, authorities said.
Police chief Fredrik Persson said a 33-year-old man was arrested near the scene shortly before the fatal attack.
Swedish daily Expressen said the suspect had ties to the group known as anti-government, anti-establishment and neo-Nazi NMR.
Persson said: “There is currently an extensive investigation underway to determine the suspect’s motives and background.”
He said there are a number of questions about the fact that the gruesome killing was carried out in public “at a conference with many people in Visby and in broad daylight”.
Authorities have not yet determined a motive, but Persson said political motivation cannot be ruled out.
Lena Hallengren, the minister of health and social affairs described Ing-Marie as an “inspiration”.
“For me Ing-Marie was an important source of knowledge and inspiration for working with mental illness. My thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues.”
