The West must be prepared to continue to support Ukraine in a war that could last for years, the NATO chief has warned.
Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told Bild that the costs of the war were high, but the cost of letting Moscow achieve its military goals was even greater.
His comments came after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also warned of the need to prepare for a long-term conflict.
Stoltenberg and Johnson said sending more weapons would make a victory for Ukraine more likely.
“We have to prepare for the fact that it may take years. We must not give up Ukraine’s support. “Even if the costs are high, and here I am not talking only about military support.”
The head of the Western military alliance said supplying Ukraine with more modern weapons would increase its chances of being able to liberate the eastern region of the country Donbas, most of which is currently under Russian control.
In recent months, Russian and Ukrainian forces have been fighting for control of territory in the east of the country – with Moscow making slow progress in recent weeks.
