The situation in Ukraine is causing alarm in the EU to fall from the risk of destabilization and in the Balkans.
The bloc’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, made it clear that the European Union should start formal talks as soon as possible on the accession of Albania and northern Macedonia. The unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Borell said, is “a moment for the revival of the enlargement process.”
We will continue to talk to Bulgaria until this issue is resolved. Bilateral problems can no longer determine the membership process.
Bulgaria, which has threatened to thwart Skopje’s European integration efforts. For decades, the two countries have been at loggerheads over language and historical issues, culminating in 2020, when Bulgaria – an EU member – vetoed a proposal to start membership talks with northern Macedonia, and the deadlock has affected Albania.
Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the attack on the neighboring country after receiving no assurances from NATO that it would not expand further east. From the Western Balkan countries, members of the military alliance are Northern Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro, while Kosovo, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina remain outside.
