Nine years after being released from prison, one of the founders of the Guadalajara drug cartel, Rafael Caro-Quintero, was arrested in the Mexican city of Guachochi.
The 69-year-old drug lord, otherwise known by the nickname Narco de Narcos, had two arrest warrants in his name – one from the Attorney General of Mexico and one from the United States. The US Department of Justice offered a reward of $20 million. for information leading to his capture, the largest reward offered for a single fugitive.
Until a few hours ago, the FBI considered him one of the ten most wanted people in the world. The Federal Bureau of Investigation says Caro-Quintero is currently a member of the Sinaloa cartel, where he was born. Experts describe this as the most important arrest made in the six-year term of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, even more important than the arrest of drug lord Jose Antonio Hepez Ortiz, leader of the powerful Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, who was captured in October 2021. Caro-Quintero is suspected of being involved in the kidnapping, torture and murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique Kiki Camarena .
Because of this, he was arrested in Costa Rica the same year and extradited to Mexico, where the court sentenced him to 40 years, but he was released in 2013 after serving 28 years in prison. However, two years later, the court again issued an order for him.
