The United States will impose tough consequences on countries that disrupt the international economic order, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Tuesday.
“Economic integration has been turned into a weapon by Russia,” she said, calling on all countries to come together to oppose Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The United States is seeking increased trade ties with South Korea and other allies in order to improve the stability of supply chains and avoid potential manipulation by geopolitical rivals, Yellen said.
Yellen is on an official visit to South Korea and said that during this visit she has been warned that she will raise the issue of the price ceiling for Russian oil.
During the visit to South Korea, Yellen also criticized China. She said the US and South Korea should strengthen their trade ties so that other countries do not gain an advantage in international markets, citing China.
“We cannot allow countries like China to use their market position in raw materials, technologies or key products to hinder our economy or exert unwanted geopolitical influence,” Yellen said in Seoul.
The visit to Seoul is part of Secretary Yellen’s 11-day tour of the Indo-Pacific region.
Later on Tuesday, she will also meet with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol./REL
