US President Joe Biden’s bill to help Americans cope with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic has passed a major hurdle.
The $ 1.9 trillion plan was approved by the Senate on Saturday, regardless of why each Republican voted against it.
The House of Representatives – controlled by Biden Democrats – is expected to approve the plan next Tuesday.
Biden described the Senate vote as “another giant step forward” as he pledged to help people.
The worst health crisis in a century in the United States has left nearly 523,000 people dead, over 29 million infected, and has resulted in an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent.
The aid package – the third in the United States since the start of the pandemic – envisions a $ 1,400 payment split for most Americans.
Biden has said such payments could begin to be distributed later this month.
Republicans believe the plan is too costly.
