The United States and Russia are likely to hold talks next month to discuss security proposals presented by Moscow, as tensions have risen over the situation in Ukraine.
“We will decide on a date together with Russia and we believe that the talks will take place in January,” said Karen Donfried, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.
Donfried said the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) would discuss the possibility of a meeting with Russia on Tuesday to discuss Moscow’s proposals. She added that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is working on how to engage with Russia.
“In my opinion, we will see movement in these channels during January,” she said.
On December 17, Russia announced its security demands, seeking assurances from the United States and NATO that the Alliance would not expand eastward.
Moscow’s demands come at a time when the Kremlin has deployed about 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine. The U.S. has said Russia may be preparing to launch an invasion over the next month. But Russia has denied allegations that it is preparing to attack Ukraine.
