The United States has rejected an offer from Poland to transfer Russian-made MiG-29 fighter jets to the US base in Germany as a way to strengthen Ukraine’s air force as it faces Russian occupation.
The United States intends to increase arms shipments to Ukraine, but the idea of sending fighter jets from NATO territory to a war zone “raises serious concerns for the entire NATO alliance,” the Pentagon said.
NATO has said it does not want a direct conflict with Russia, and US President Joe Biden has ruled out sending US troops to fight in Ukraine.
“It’s just unclear to us if there are rational reasons for this,” said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, commenting on Poland’s proposal.
“We will continue to consult with Poland and other NATO allies on this issue, and the logistical challenges it carries with it, but we do not believe that Poland’s proposal is acceptable.”
The Polish Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that it is ready to deliver MiG-29 aircraft to Ramstein Air Base in Germany and make them available in the United States.
