The US Department of Justice has announced that it has seized more than $ 3.6 billion worth of bitcoin, the largest seizure of funds in history.
It is part of the 120,000 bitcoins stolen in August 2016 during a hacker infiltration of the Bitfinex cryptocurrency trading platform in Hong Kong, which at the time was the largest online exchange office for converting bitcoin to dollars and vice versa. At the time, the amount stolen was worth about $ 72 million.
U.S. authorities have also confirmed the arrest of two people, a man named Ilya Lichtenstein, 34, and his wife, Heather Morgan, 31, on suspicion of money laundering, after the stolen funds ended up in a digital wallet that belonged to Lichtenstein.
It is the largest seizure of financial assets in history and the most famous case in the intensified efforts recently announced by the US judiciary to tackle criminal activities related to cryptocurrencies.
According to the Washington Post, investigators monitored transactions in which the suspects tried to cover up the money trail and the amount seized represents 94,000 bitcoins or nearly 80 percent of the stolen amount. It is not yet known what happened to the rest.
