The United States has vowed to return, in “full compliance”, to the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers if Tehran does the same.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said at the United Nations-sponsored Disarmament Conference that Washington hopes to expand and strengthen the nuclear deal, which the previous US administration abandoned in 2018.
“Working with allies and partners, we will aim to expand and strengthen the nuclear deal and address other areas of concern, including Iran’s destabilizing approach to the region and the development of nuclear missiles.”
Earlier in the day, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called on Iran to act in accordance with the agreement, as it is in Iran’s interest.
Maas stressed the readiness of US President Joe Biden to rejoin the agreement, saying that “it is in Iran’s best interest to change course before the agreement is damaged irreversibly.”
Maas has said Germany expects “full transparency and co-operation” from Iran with the International Atomic Energy Agency, whose chief, Rafael Grossi, returned on February 21 from a trip to Tehran.
Iran has welcomed Gross’ visit, calling the interim nuclear inspection agreement a “significant achievement.”
The deal has pushed back the deadline for maintaining the deal, which is on the verge of collapse since former US President Donald Trump ousted the United States from it.
Tehran is urging Washington to lift all sanctions imposed by Trump in 2018, while Washington has called on the Iranian authorities to initially return to all the commitments they made in the agreement.
“The United States wants to make sure that Iran never produces nuclear weapons,” Blinken said.
“Diplomacy is the best way to achieve goals.”
In response, Iran’s conservative-dominated parliament has demanded that the country limit some inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency, starting February 23.
