The discovery of a 19.5-meter-tall tree with its roots, branches and leaves, is unprecedented according to experts.

Spread over almost the entire western peninsula of the Greek island of Lesbos, the forest with fossilized trees has been declared a global geopark by Unesco, and is one of the largest in the world.

The excavation team of 35 people, along the 20km highway that connects Sigri with Kalloni, since 2013 have discovered 15 such fossil sites, but the latter was ranked much higher than the others.
They said discovering a full tree lying among a flower bed is simply luck.
Lesbos fossil forests offer a precious window to the past, said British researcher Iain Stewart.
“It’s a perfect place to investigate the environment that existed 20 million years ago,” he told The Guardian.
