UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has requested a special meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine to discuss the urgent need for peace.
According to a statement from UN spokeswoman Stephane Dujarric, Guterres will discuss with Ukrainian and Russian lira the urgent steps to bring peace to Ukraine and the future of multilateralism based on the United Nations Charter and international law.
The spokesman noted that Guterres is awaiting responses from the Russian and Ukrainian governments to a request for a meeting.
Dujarric said he would accompany the secretary-general if he traveled, but did not say who else would go.
He noted that Guterres and Russian President Vladimir Putin crossed paths briefly in Beijing for the Winter Olympics, but Putin had left before they could meet.
