UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on the military in Myanmar to allow access to humanitarian aid and address the “desperate needs” of the Myanmar people, stressing that last year’s military coup ended a decade-long democracy and plunged the state into unrest.
The military coup of February 1, 2021 ousted the elected Government from power and was followed by months of protests in Myanmar, which were suppressed by the military junta.
“The plight of all people across Myanmar and in the region requires urgent response. “People’s access to aid is important to the UN and our partners,” said Farhan Haq, spokesman for Secretary Antonio Guterres.
“The armed forces and all other parties must respect human rights and fundamental rights. “The people of Myanmar need to see concrete results,” the statement said.
The Myanmar military government has not commented on Secretary Guterres’s call. Myanmar’s military leaders have said the crackdown was aimed at protecting the country from “terrorists”.
The junta has vowed not to back down in the face of international pressure and has criticized the UN, accusing it of being biased and interfering in Myanmar’s affairs.
