US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced the appointment of two women, who will lead US efforts to support Afghan women and girls, as well as human rights.
Blinken appointed Rina Amir as special envoy for Afghan women and girls and for human rights. Meanwhile, Stephanie Foster was appointed senior adviser on girls’ issues in the relocation effort, the US State Department (DASH) said on December 29th.
Blinken said Rina, an American researcher of Afghan descent, “will work on a very important issue for me, for this administration and for US national security: the human rights and fundamental freedoms of women, girls and the population.” in danger”.
Foster will work with the DASH team to coordinate Afghan Resettlement Efforts.
“We want a peaceful, stable and secure Afghanistan, where all Afghans can live and thrive on political, economic and social inclusion,” Blinken said.
Since taking power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have appointed a male-only government and vowed to restore Islamic Sharia law. The hardline Islamist group has also shut down the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and restricted women’s rights, despite pledging that the new government will respect human rights.
Many women have been barred from returning to work, while most girls have been barred from high school.
