The U.S. Department of Justice said Sunday it would review the response given by law enforcement agencies to the gun attack on a school in Uvalde, Texas, during which 19 children and two teachers were killed.
The police response is facing growing public outrage over what has been described as a failure to deal swiftly with the gunman.
The latter stayed for about an hour in a classroom of “Robb” primary school, while police officers were waiting in the corridor and the children inside were calling for help, reports VOA.
Texas state and county authorities have announced they are conducting an investigation into the incident. Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said that at the request of the mayor of Uvaldet, a critical review will be conducted regarding the response of law enforcement structures to the event.
“The purpose of the review is to provide an independent overview of the actions and responses of law enforcement structures that day, as well as to draw lessons and implement best practices to help structures that are responsible for responding to the first ground, in cases where the perpetrators of the attacks continue to be dangerousSaid Mr. Coley.
“The Department of Justice will publish a report with its findings at the conclusion of this review“, Added Mr. Coley.
