Afghanistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund has called on governments to formally recognize the Taliban-led administration, which took power in August last year.
He said at a press conference that all conditions have been met.
“I urge all governments, especially Islamic states, to begin recognition,” said Akhund, co-founder of the Taliban.
He also called for the lifting of the blockade on Afghanistan’s frozen assets, which are held abroad, as well as for the increase of humanitarian aid, as this country faces a major humanitarian crisis.
This call comes after the European Union announced that it has launched projects worth 268.3 million euros, in support of the Afghan population.
The Taliban have taken control of Afghanistan following the destruction of the internationally backed government in Kabul, as well as at a time when international forces were withdrawing from the country after a 20-year war.
No country has officially recognized the Taliban government.
Western nations have said they will see if the Taliban will lead under the regime of 20 years ago, when they were in power for the first time.
In an effort to secure international recognition, the Taliban have signaled that they will have a more moderate approach, compared to the past.
However, the militants continue to be under international pressure due to human rights violations, especially those in the field of women’s education, employment and their participation in political and social life.
