A delegation of the Taliban and Western diplomats are expected to meet today in Oslo for talks on the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and human rights.
Closed-door talks will be held between a 15-member Taliban delegation and representatives of the United States, France, Britain, Germany, Italy, the European Union and Norway. These discussions are expected to focus on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, which has deteriorated drastically since the Taliban took power.
The Taliban delegation is expected to seek access to billions of dollars in frozen assets after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan last August as US-led forces withdrew from the country.
Afghanistan is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis, as 22.8 million people are facing scarce food supplies and 8.7 million people are on the brink of starvation, the United Nations has said.
Since August, international aid, which financed about 80 percent of the Afghan budget, has been suspended and the United States has frozen $ 9.5 billion in assets of the Afghan Central Bank. Unemployment has risen, while civil servants have not been paid for months.
“We are asking them to stop freezing Afghan assets and not to punish ordinary Afghan citizens for political discourse,” said Taliban delegation member Shafiullah Azam.
“Because of the hunger, because of the deadly winter, I believe it is time for the international community to support the Afghans and not punish them for their political differences,” he said.
January 23 in Oslo, Norway was the first day of talks between the Taliban delegation. They talked to members of civil society on the topic of human rights.
