Bulgaria’s parliament on Thursday ousted President Nikola Minchev in a new blow to Prime Minister Kiril Petkov’s coalition government, which faces a no – confidence vote next week.
The motion presented by the former partner of the ruling coalition “There is such a people”, with the support of the ruling GERB, “Movement for Rights and Freedoms” (MRF) and “Vazrazhdane”.
They claim that Minchev has violated the Constitution and the rules of procedure of the Assembly and is obstructing normal legislative work and parliamentary control over the work of the government.
The replacement motion received 125 votes in favor, 113 against and one abstention.
In accordance with the rules of procedure of the Parliament, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Miroslav Ivanov, will replace Minchev. The new Speaker of the National Assembly must be elected within 14 days of Minchev’s dismissal.
Analysts say Minchev’s ouster showed new balances in parliament and signaled that Petkov’s government could fall to a no-confidence vote next week. This would send the Balkan country into a new round of political unrest.
Petkov, who took office in December after a protracted political crisis with pledges to fight high-level corruption in the European Union’s poorest country, voiced hope he could still find the seven MPs needed to restore the majority.
An eventual overthrow of the government is likely to lead to new elections in the autumn, between the war in Ukraine and rising inflation, which has reached its highest level in 24 years.
