A SpaceX rocket has entered a collision course with the Moon after spending almost seven years wandering in space, experts say.
The rocket was originally launched from Florida in February 2015 as part of an interplanetary mission to send a climate monitoring satellite into space.
But after completing a long burn of its engines and sending it to the Space Climate Observatory – the second phase of the rocket’s journey took a different direction.
It did not have enough fuel to return to Earth’s atmosphere, but it also “lacked the energy to escape the gravity of the Earth-Moon system,” explained expert Eric Berger.
Space observers believe the rocket is already on its way to the Moon at a speed of about 2.58 km / s for several weeks.
Bill Gray, who studies near-Earth objects, asteroids, small planets and comets, has said that Falcon 9 will most likely hit the surface of the moon on March 4.
As for whether the collision can be seen from Earth, Gray says it will probably go unnoticed.
